“America went into the decade as the great victor from the Cold War. There was a combination of self-righteousness and a sense of power. Both of those have been lost,” says Gil Troy, a history professor at McGill University.
“The two biggest traumas of the decade – 9/11 and the economic meltdown – hit America very personally, where it hurts. You have a country that has been knocked down a peg or two.”
